SFA Horn Studio
The Stephen F. Austin State University Horn Studio is under the direction of Dr. Andrea Denis. The studio averages in size of 24-28 horn players, most earning their degrees in Music Education or Performance. The horn studio has students from all over the state of Texas, but when they arrive at SFA, they become one big musical family. We strive to support all students at any ability level creating a sense of camaraderie and acceptance.
The horn studio is also encouraged to participate in horn choir, a group made-up of major and non-major horn players who meet once a week, and play fun and challenging arrangements for horn. The horn octet is also comprised of horn studio members, but is an audition-only based group who meet regularly.Â
Additionally, many studio members and supporters of our studio show their support in the Purple Horn Society (PHS). PHS is a student organization founded by members of our studio. It funds trips, gives students good work experience, and promotes creativity and teamwork.
Many of the studio members participate in summer music festivals, as well as DCI. They also fill roles as techs, and masters or doctoral students/graduates, and attend masterclasses.
The Purple Horn society (PHS) is an established student organization at Stephen F. Austin State University. It is founded by members of the SFA Horn Studio, and its supporters that are made up of music majors, and non-majors alike.
Through Fundraising, volunteer work, and more, PHS helps fund, support, and promote our studio. The main objectives of PHS are to support our studio on trips to learn and perform, raise funds to purchase supplies for studio members, and help organize events such as the Mid-South Horn Workshop, or Pineywoods Horn Day.
